The Online Tamil Heritage Museum is a cultural, educational, and research-focused institution dedicated to the documentation, preservation, interpretation, and promotion of the history, heritage, and cultural traditions of Tamil-speaking communities, with particular emphasis on the Eezham Tamils of Ilankai (Sri Lanka).
Established as an authoritative and accessible digital resource, the museum brings together archival materials, historical records, scholarly research, oral histories, photographs, manuscripts, artefacts, and cultural narratives to explore the historical experiences, intellectual achievements, and enduring contributions of Tamil communities within local, national, and global contexts.
Our mission is to safeguard and promote Tamil heritage for future generations while fostering academic inquiry, public engagement, and intercultural understanding. Through carefully curated collections, virtual exhibitions, educational programmes, and research initiatives, the museum provides a platform for interdisciplinary scholarship and critical engagement with Tamil history, culture, and identity.
The museum examines the diverse dimensions of Tamil civilisation, including religion, literature, language, architecture, education, traditional knowledge systems, social institutions, arts, crafts, maritime traditions, agrarian heritage, diaspora histories, and cultural practices. Special attention is given to the historical development and cultural heritage of Eezham Tamils and their interactions with other communities of the island of Sri Lanka and the wider Tamil world.
The Online Tamil Heritage Museum serves as a centre for heritage preservation, knowledge production, and public history. By connecting historical documentation with contemporary cultural expression, the museum contributes to scholarly discourse, strengthens intergenerational memory, and ensures that the rich and diverse heritage of Tamil-speaking peoples remains accessible to communities in the United Kingdom and throughout the world.
